Jugaad (Innovation) Lab is an out of the box and inspiring initiative of Feminist Approach to Technology (FAT), which creates a much-needed space for girls from disadvantaged communities of Delhi, to kindle their interest in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
This space more popularly called ‘the lab’ for girls is a place which sparks their imagination and aids their intellectual growth and development; a place where they can tinker, build, break and rebuild stuff to learn through hands on work and experimentation, all the while also learning STEM concepts. The lab has regular interactive classes in the afternoon where a study schedule is followed. While new concepts of STEM are introduced and many revised, new projects are initiated to create and innovate something using mundane items and learnt 'science' concepts. The Lab uses tools like videos, projects, books, worksheets, activities and model-making to build their understanding around STEM subjects. Some days are more fun and energetic with informal sessions, games, exercises on diverse issues.
The Lab today has a total of 20 participants called the 'Little Innovators' from ages 11 yrs to 15 yrs, mobilized from government schools ( from class 6th to 8th) and low income communities near Lajpat Nagar, South Delhi. Challenging so many social norms and odds the girls are fighting to make a dream. Trying to make a space for themself, and many like them, in fields of STEM. A distant dream of course, but the our constant encouragement and support will strengthen their fight.
I have pledged to raise funds so that 5 of these young girls, called the little innovators, can continue to come to class for a year. These girls at class not only learn concepts, but they also learn about other issues like nutrition, early marriage, gender issues etc. But I do need your support to take this ahead. Help me fund-raise for them this November and December, through this campaign.
Thank you in advance :)
